TOPIC:The Power of the Word `Let'

               by Rev. Dr. Reg Dunlap

TEXT:Genesis 1:1-3

“And God said, Let there be light” (Genesis 1:3)

The little word “let” is used approximately 175 times in the Word of God. Nine times in this first chapter of Genesis we find the word being used by the writer. Permit me to mention them.

In verse 3: “Let there be light.” In verse 6: “Let there be a firmament.” In verse 8: “Let the waters.” In verse 11: “Let the earth.” In verse 14: “Let there be lights.” In verse 15: “Let them be for lights.” In verse 20: “Let the waters.” In verse 24: “Let the earth.” And in verse 26: “Let us make man.”

Oh the power of that little word “let.” It is a word of tremendous faith with volumes of meaning poured into it. It assumes the total love and good will of the Father. The word “let” is saying, “God, I give you permission to do what You desire in my life.” It is declaring in effect, “Let go and let God.” I say to you, would that not simplify life? It certainly would deliver us from a lot of self-made problems.

I ask: What is the significance of this three letter word for us? I shall mention three different places when that three letter word is used and the gigantic meaning it has for each one of us.

I.

To begin with, consider the “let” of a GLOWING LIGHT. Turn with me to Matthew chapter 5 verses 14 through 16. There in His Sermon on the Mount Jesus declared: “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.”
